HOW TO GIVE TO GOD

TEXT- 2 CORINTHIANS 8:1-5

INTRODUCTION

This morning I would like us to continue with our study from the Book of Second Corinthians which the Apostle Paul wrote to the church in Corinth for the purpose of encouraging them to become more involved in the Lord's ministry.

In chapters 8 and 9 Paul addresses an issue that is very practical today for God's people.  Some have said that these chapters are more personal than any other within this book.

Primarily they focus on the need for God's people to support the ministry of the Lord's church through their tithes and offerings.  In these two chapters we will see many different principles that relate to this topic and how to apply them to our lives today.

This morning our text is found in 2 Corinthians 8:1-5 and I would like us to see how Paul describes for us the way the churches of Macedonia gave towards the ministry of the Lord.

A pastor was having a hard time raising enough money for the church's building program and decided he would give the members a little nudge to help them get started.  On Saturday he wired all the pews with electricity which was controlled by three buttons under the pulpit.  On Sunday morning he announced from the pulpit, "All who will give $100 toward the new building, please stand up."  At the same time he pressed the first button and twenty people sprang out of their seats.

"Good, good," said the preacher with a grin.  "Now all who will give $500, stand up."  At the same time he pressed the second button and thirty more people jumped to their feet.

"Excellent," he shouted.  "Now all who will give $1000, stand up."  At which time he pressed the third button and fourteen church members were electrocuted.

As we examine our text today I would like us to notice four guiding principles for giving.
